Our school held several events to celebrate Christmas in 2023. The Star of the Sea Parents Association hosted a wonderful Christmas Fair in the school on Sunday the 3rd of December. Our boys sang beautifully during our school carol service on the evening of Thursday the 14th of December. As always we held our service in St. Mary’s, Star of the Sea Church and we were supported in doing so by the parish team. Just before the Christmas holiday, we had a very special visitor call to our school: Santa Claus met every Star Boy in our school hall.

Garda Visit To Engrave Bicycles
Our boys are grateful to the Gardaí from Irishtown Garda station, in particular Garda Katie, for facilitating our whole-school bike engraving event. All boys who wished to do so were allowed to bring their bike or scooter to school. Our local Gardaí called to the school with an engraving machine and engraved a code onto every bicycle and scooter. All of our bikes are more secure following this visit.
Hurling In Croke Park
A group of Sixth Class boys from our hurling squad were lucky enough to be selected to play in Croke Park as part of the Allianz Rewards Day. The boys got to play two matches under Go Games rules on the pitch on Sunday the 22nd of December. It was a rich experience for all who attended.
Jeanie Johnston Visit
Mr Collins’ Fifth Class boys visited the Jeanie Johnston, a three-masted barque that gave the boys a unique insight into conditions faced by emigrants during the Great Famine. This was a highly interesting tour led by wonderful tour guides who allowed our boys to enjoy a morning of fun and learning.
Maths Week 2023
Every boy in Star of the Sea celebrated Maths Week 2023 with fun activities, challenges, trails, games, quizzes, and our annual ‘estimate the number of sweets in the jar’ competition. Well done to all of our boys and their teachers for making it the most fun Maths Week ever at Star of the Sea!
Gaelic Football
Our senior and junior teams had successful seasons. A large number of boys in Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes participated in training and the quality of football played in some of our matches was a testament to the boys’ progress. Our senior team was unlucky to lose out to Scoil Thomáis in the semi final stage of Corn na nGearaltach. After a slow start our boys got back to within a single point following an amazing second half comeback. However despite their amazing efforts, the boys were unable to reach the final this year. We congratulate Scoil Thomáis, who went on the win the Croke Park final. We reflect with satisfaction on some amazing performances by our team this year against strong schools. The hurling season commences after the mid-term break.
