Autism-Specific Special Class Project

Autism-Specific Special Class Project

The Board of Management of our school has established an autism-specific special class to meet the needs of children and families in our parish.

The new special class opened in May 2021 in advance of the necessary facilities being in place as school places were urgently required for autistic children.

The Board engaged experts to advise on and plan for the necessary new  facilities at the school to support  the special class and on the basis of that advice applied to the Department of Education for funding for an appropriate extension to the premises.
As of May 2023 our school has unfortunately still not received final confirmation from the Department in relation to the necessary funding. The Board has therefore approved the reconfiguration of an existing classroom as a multi-sensory room for September 2023

The experts engaged to advise on and plan for the new facilities have advised the Board that the school site is not suitable to facilitate access by minibus or car. As a result the Board is not in a position to allow staff to manage the transition of pupils into the school building for health and safety reasons.
